Most patients meet with their orthodontist every six weeks, for up to
two years. That’s why it’s important for you put your smile in the hands of someone you enjoy and trust. Dr. John and Dr. Terry want you to know a little bit about themselves, just as they’ll
want to know about you.

Dr. John
Dr. John jokes that he entered orthodontia because of a “defective dental
gene” inherited from his father. “When I was growing up, I worked
in the office trimming dental models,” he explains. ”I must have
absorbed something from the air.”
Dr. John majored in environmental economics at Colorado College
just to be certain he wasn’t missing his true calling elsewhere. But by his
sophomore year, he knew his fate had long been sealed. “I wanted to
take care of people and be my own boss,” he says.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Dr. John spent a year traveling
Europe by bike and working odd jobs. Then he got down to business:
he completed dentistry training at Oregon Health Sciences University,
spent
four years in the army gaining more hands-on dental experience,
and later completed his orthodontics studies at the University
of Pennsylvania.
In 1996, Dr. John headed back west and joined his father’s practice.
He now lectures to dental students across the continent on the best orthodontic
treatments and develops treatment plans for his patients every day here
in Oregon.
“I enjoy watching my patients grow,” says Dr. John. “Whether
they’re 13 or 83, I get to see their teeth change as they themselves
change, too. “

Dr. Terry
Born in a small town in Iowa, Dr. Terry spent much of his childhood
modeling airplanes. Little did he know the handiwork required to assemble
them was training for his future career.
“I happened to excel in the subjects required for admission to dental
school,” says Dr. Terry. ”Once I enrolled, I was in my element.
I loved working with my hands.”
The first person in his family to attend college, Dr. Terry graduated
from the University of Michigan Dental School. After serving four years
in the United States Army, he completed training in orthodontics and earned
a master's degree from the University of Michigan in 1967. Then he established
his practice in Salem, Oregon.
Forty years later, Dr. Terry has shaped the smiles of thousands of patients,
including thousands he has never met. An activist in his field, Dr. Terry
has held numerous top leadership and teaching positions and developed
an “evidence-based” treatment philosophy that has impacted
orthodontic care worldwide.
“My activism has always been motivated by my passion for my specialty,” says
Dr. Terry. “Being an orthodontist is truly a joy.”
